The Membrane Liquid Trap:
Liquid-Gas Separation
by Metal Membranes

U.S. Patent No. 4,938,785

A Membrane Liquid Trap (MLT) has been invented at PAI Corporation for the efficient separation of fine liquid particles from a two-phase stream. The metal membrane is fabricated into a particular geometry and can separate liquid droplets with a diameter as small as a few microns at temperatures of several hundred degrees C with an efficiency of over 99%. Originally developed for liquid metal vapor Rankine cycle power plants for space, this technology also has many terrestrial applications.

       Potential Applications

  • Efficient power generation in deep space
  • Steam drying in power system (steam generators, separators, reheaters)
  • Efficient and longer-lasting steam turbines
  • Drying gases in chemical processes
  • Assurance of dry compressed-air lines
